Meditation is a mind body practice that has a long history of use for increasing calmness and relaxation, improving psychological balance, coping with illness, and enhancing overall health & wellbeing. Mind and body practices focus on the interaction among the brain, mind, body and behaviour. There are many types of meditation, but most have four elements in common: a quiet location with as few distractions as possible; a specific comfortable posture (sitting, lying down, walking, or in other positions); a focus of attention (a specifically chosen word or set of words, and object, or the sensations of the breath); and an open attitude (letting distractions come and go naturally without judging them).
Research at NCCIH (National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health) suggests that practicing meditation can reduce blood pressure, risk of heart disease & stroke, symptoms of irritable syndrome, anxiety and depression, insomnia, and the incidence, duration and severity of acute respiratory illnesses (such as influenza). An additional study found that meditation can affect activity in the amygdala (a part of the brain involved in processing emotions).
